This five part lesson begins by introducing the concepts of positive and negative numbers through real world examples. Then moves into modeling using algebra tiles and number lines. The next section uses basic algebra tile modeling to introduce the concepts of integer operations. Then students apply this to word problem scenarios that require them to model the situations presented with algebra tiles. The lesson finishes with a written reflection.
For best results, use this activity with students in small group or whole group instruction, rather than as an individual assignment.
