How I use them....When I really began to understand the value of
intentional partnering of my student-WOW! What a change it made in their overall achievement & just the classroom community in general. Use the smaller cards to place on student desks for an easy reminder of which partner they are. For example: If we are working on addition with regrouping I may put my students who are mastering it as “apples” and pair them up with students who need a little extra guidance “Oranges”. Laminate the larger charts and use a dry erase marker to change partners as needed.

When students know their "purpose" in their groups and what it is they need to accomplish you begin to see dramatic increase in their productivity while working with partner or in a small groups.

By having predetermined their grouping it becomes much easier to delegate what you would like specific students to do. For example if in a math lesson on subtraction with regrouping if I have some students who are forgetting to "go next door & get ten more" and then I have some students who are accidentally adding and not subtracting - I might assign apples to be the partner who must circle the subtraction sign and subtract and oranges must be the partner who goes next door and borrows ten more. I would pair students up with a partner who is strong where the other may be weak and hold each accountable to "watch" for their partner to complete their specific job.

Intentional grouping has been a lifesaver in my classroom!
