Interactive Arts for Total Literacy (http://www.aeideas.com/?product=interactive-arts-for-total-literacy) includes 9 units for primary grades, developed around broad literacy themes that alternate between big picture and discrete early literacy skills. Each unit explores the concept across modalities: auditory, kinesthetic, visual, and linguistic (or through visual art, music, movement/dance and drama). This is the introductory unit, establishing patterns of behavior and expectations for classroom interactions. This unit was originally developed as part of a research project started in April with struggling Grade 1 students. By the end of the school year, 2/3 of non-reading children were reading, and understood the basic idea of how to decode print text.
