In this activity, students will decide how many of each item (balloons, hamburgers, mini cupcakes, small nerf guns, and cans of soda) they will need for a hypothetical birthday party. Then, students will collect supplies into a shopping cart (Google Drawing embedded into spreadsheet activity). Next, they will create a bar graph by highlighting the cells in the graph and changing them to the correct color. Last, students will answer 4 statements about their graph by filling in the blanks. For example, "I bought _____ more _____ than _____." or "I bought _____ less _____ AND _____ than _____."
I created this activity so my students can manipulate a bar graph and make concrete connections. I want them to understand the relationship between the number of items in a cart and the data in a bar graph.
