Product Description

This no print and no prep ActivInspire flipchart book is a fun Halloween story that engages students with autism and developmental delays from the cover to the last page. The story increases their use/understanding of fringe words (i.e. witch, vampire) and core words (i.e. who, what, has, can, do, etc.) when paired with their AAC device or a core word board.

This flipchart lesson includes:

"I can" statements

• notes browser (yellow note icon) explains features for interactive pages

• simple, interactive Table of Contents/lesson schedule

• visual dictionary to introduce Halloween characters

• engaging story with character sound effects and visual supports to aid the students in determining who the mystery character may be

• party scene at end of story for "What is _____ doing?" question

• repetitive text to teach core words using device or core word board. Some of the core words may include: who, can, it, my, has, do

• an interactive survey (“Did you like the story?”)

• lesson closure page

• 28 interactive pages

Repetition, repetition, repetition. I use these flipcharts like a storybook and read them repeatedly over a number of sessions. For large group instruction, the special education teachers and the paraprofessional assist while I present the flipchart on the interactive whiteboard and point to the core word board.

This is how I use the flipchart:

  • Introduce vocabulary in Visual Dictionary of the flipchart. Act like the character or make the sounds they do.
  • With the student’s AAC device and/or a core word board nearby for me to model pointing, I read the flipchart book once through as I click all of the interactive features.
  • I read it again with the students acting out the parts (i.e. pretend to open door, hit a piñata, bob for apples, etc.). I continue to pair it with the AAC device and core word board.
  • The 3rd, 4th, etc. readings are completed during following therapy sessions and followed up by an activity such as on of the super fun follow-up activities listed below. Aided Language Input is continued.
  • By the time the unit is finished, I have read the story up to five times. I have modeled AAC use and the students know the story. The special education teacher has the interactive whiteboard as one of the centers. This is when the students read it, click the interactive features on the flipchart on their own, and (fingers crossed) use their AAC device or core word board as they have seen me use it. Of course, the SLP, teacher, or paraprofessional may be at that center to facilitate and guide.
  • I use these flipcharts for small groups and individual groups, too. When I do not have access to an interactive whiteboard, I use my laptop computer.
  • Super fun follow-up activities:

    Mini Book for Language: Halloween

Core Word & Conversation Snack Mats: Welcome to My House, My Scary Haunted House

    Playdough Mats for Language: Halloween
