This “KWLA Chart” is appropriate for reading comprehension and writing instruction in grades 1st-3rd. (Two materials, 1st-3rd and 4th-8th, are provided and can be purchased for diverse students and grade levels.)
The “KWLA Chart” material is unique, with three interactive sets. Student friendly mapping strategies can be used in the teaching of comprehending informational and nonfiction texts read and planning and organizing report essays to be written across the curriculum. Original genre pictures, created as an instructional model and by the teacher and students, provide visual support in understanding and utilizing the “KWLA Chart” to more effectively map, report, and write an essay about what students Know, Want to Know, Learned, and Feel or will Use. (The Affective and Applied column on the “KWLA Chart” is for a Feeling(s) and Use(s) of what students Learned about the nonfiction topic.)
Teacher Instructional Modeling and Student Copies are included. Three “KWLA Chart” sets engage learners in using the KWLA strategies. The KWLA graphic organizer material is appropriate for teaching and reinforcing the Common Core English Language Arts Standards of Reading: Informational Text, Speaking and Listening, and Writing referenced on page 10. Also referenced are topic appropriate videos, internet resources, and literature to be used with the instructional modeling frog topic and “KWLA Chart” pages.
The selected “KWLA Chart” strategies of Know, Want to Know, Learned, and Affective and/or Applied can be a lesson focus.
