Product Description

This resource is a Google Form and Doc linked to an interactive image on New York’s Flatiron Building.

In the late 1800's, a building boom changed American cities. But land was limited, so builders designed upward, introducing the skyscraper. Steel framing and electric elevators allowed architects to build taller and stronger structures, such as New York’s Flatiron Building.

Students can use the Google Earth link to explore the Flatiron district in New York city. Students will analyze the interactive image. Then complete the 9 reading comprehension questions on the form. Next, students will answer the 3 short answer questions on the doc. This activity has worked very well in pairs. This is an excellent enrichment activity.

Students will learn about:

  • The challenges of the project
  • Building the Flatiron
  • Phases of construction
  • Becoming an Icon
  • Making an Impact
