This journal incorporates figurative language, homophones, spelling, verb tense, all capitalization and punctuation rules, and all grammar rules. All activities are incorporated to each holiday and can be used yearly. The pages may be copied and pasted into each student's journal by them or used on the smart board as whole group. Mechanic Monday gives the student's three sentences to edit. I have the students use editing marks with a pen on the pasted strip, then rewrite the sentences correctly. Top Ten Tuesday is a list that incorporates capitalization skills in all testing areas. Would you rather Wednesday lets the students select a choice and give reasons why. It is also practice in turning a question into a statement. Word Play Thursday is a puzzle. It is a common idiom. The students identify the idiom, write a sentence, then draw what it is and what it is not . Flash Light Friday or Free Friday: Flash light :read with flashlights. Free Friday :do as they choose on their journal page. One spiral will be enough for an entire year of material. I use the front and back. Every day the student looks forward to the questions while they practice these skills. These are used as bell ringers in my room and should take no more that ten to fifteen minutes daily for this continued practice of essential skills in common core as well as TEKS for STAAR practice.
