Teaching language skills shouldn’t be a mystery. Most importantly, it shouldn’t be boring! After many years of copying packets of worksheets for my students to learn language skills, I’d finally had enough of the work that wasn’t working. I was lucky enough to have an “experimental” year of teaching. It was THE most successful year of teaching in my entire career. (Not just in English Language Arts). I created this journal to guide my instruction of language skills, provide practice in a nontraditional format, and assess knowledge of skills. My kids LOVE their language journals because they are different than the norm, but they are also so proud to show them off. (You know it’s great when it’s one the first things the kids run to at Open House!) Students are able to individual their work, making learning more meaningful. I LOVE when kids share what they wrote and two kids sitting next to each other have different (but both correct) responses/ideas! I hope you enjoy using language journals as much as my students and I do! It’ll change how you teach!
