I created this unit after searching for interactive math activities for my third grade students that aligned with the CCSS for Math. Jen Runde from Runde’s Room created an Interactive Math Journal for her sixth grade students. I loved how she incorporated a writing component into her math activities.
It was a bit too challenging for my third graders, so I created flip book activities and a writing component that my third graders could handle, that mirrored her approach. Now that I am in Fourth Grade I have done the same thing for my fourth graders.
With each new lesson that I teach, I start out with a flipbook activity that begins with a learning goal and ends with a reflection from the students on what they learned. I tried to make this as interactive as possible in that each activity has some writing /copying and coloring. I easily could have typed the whole thing on the computer but I truly believe that the student learn more from doing, which is why I have them copy what I wrote. I like to color coordinate the front cover with what is in the inside so the students also make another connection to what is being taught.
This unit covers the MAFS for 4rd Grade, which aligns with Common Core.
