Every year I battle with the struggle of word problems for students. I wanted a way to alleviate the stress and frustration over solving word problems. I also wanted word problems to be engaging and creative. Impossible? Maybe not! I created a way for students to problem solve in teams of 3, using their interactive math journals, reflect, and share what they learned.
This strategy of implementing problem solving allows students to discuss, write, and explain their thinking, one problem at a time. These activities can be implemented once a week in whole group, once a day in math centers, once a day in whole group, during your guided math sessions, during math workshop, or even as a means of jump-starting each math day!
Included in this package you will find 68 word problem strips for all 3rd grade math strands, problem solving role posters, interactive journal flippers where students solve and explain, recording forms with reflections, and answer keys. You can print and laminate the posters for students to use in teams, or print and laminate one set to use as a bulletin board for students to refer to during each problem solving session. Interactive journal flippers/charts are also included.
