This lesson is a step by step way to show students how to solve multi-step word problems. I taught this lesson with the students using their interactive notebook. The lesson includes a preview which leads into the lesson. It also has numerous slides for the interactive learning part of the lesson and a process for students to practice independently. This lesson displays nicely on a whiteboard for whole group instruction or computers and tablets for small group instruction.
This resource contains 45 full color slides that focus on solving multi-step word problems using the four operations. Also included are left and right side activities for the interactive notebook. The preview slide ask students what is a multi-step word problem. Then the interactive learning part of the lesson teaches students how to solve multi-step word problems. This can be a hard concept if students don’t know what the problem is asking. So, I have included a document with the word problems from the PowerPoint and for the process so the students can underline and circle key words and important numbers in the problem. Several of the slides are great visual aids to help differentiate instruction for all learners through chunking and repetition. There is also a process at the end of the lesson for students to practice independently. This process can be used as an exit ticket to see what the students have learned. Be creative and do what works best for you and your students.
