I’ve been teaching grades 3rd – 7th for over 12 years now and I’ve been doing hands-on learning projects and notebooks with my students almost from the beginning of my career. However, it wasn’t until recently that I discovered there’s a name for what I have been doing for over a decade – Interactive Student Notebooks. I did some research and discovered to my delight and surprise that there is a whole teaching philosophy behind it. Who knew? So, I made a commitment to making some adjustments to my lessons to align with the ISN methodology and I really enjoyed the even greater success my students experienced as a result!
I’ve compiled some of my most successful lessons for history and share them with my TpT community of teachers. Here is my unit for Middle Ages (Medieval) Africa ideal for 5th – 9th grades. This is NOT simply a product full of templates and organizers.
You will find that all of the lessons and pages in my notebooks are truly interactive, not just worksheets to color and glue into notebooks. Here you will find some of my student’s favorite foldable projects that cover the following lessons:
Each of the 13 lessons plus 2 bonus lessons (and over 125 pages!) includes photos of the finished product, teacher’s notes, detailed teacher’s instructions (with many photos), and student pages (templates). You will find that all of the information needed to begin teaching these concepts is in here. This is NOT simply a product full of templates and organizers that require hours of research and prep time - I have included all of that information for you! I have also included many differentiated versions of each lesson to help you meet the needs of all your students from challenge to at risk.
In the preview you file, you will also find a table of contents and several sample pages of a lesson. I’ve included the Common Core alignment for grades 5-8 and included these in the preview file as well.
