Completed Interactive Notebooks become valuable study tools for students to reflect back on, and are great as a record of student progress over time.

This package includes the following:

What is an Interactive Notebook?: Two pages of information have been included, explaining the purpose of using Interactive Notebooks in your classroom. If you are new to Interactive Notebooks, this is great information to help you get started. These handouts are also great to send home with students, for parents to read and discover the cool things you are doing in your class!

Historical Figure Conversations: Two different templates have been included for this activity. For the first one, students choose two figures from their reading, and write about a conversation they would have if they were to get together. For the second activity, students must choose two figures and write about an event from their different points of view. A great activity for students to reflect on key information in a different and engaging way.

Compare and Contrast Templates: Students use this Venn Diagram style template to compare and contrast two different people or events. Two different sized versions have been included!

Five Finger Summary: Students use the hand on this handout to help choose the five most important things they have learned from the day’s lesson. When complete, students summarize that information in the middle of the hand.

Social Studies Reading Log Questions: Three pages of Reading Log Questions have been included. These questions focus on the important reading strategies of Asking Questions, Determining Importance, Inferring, Making Connections, and Summarizing. These thought provoking questions can be applied to any Social Studies reading - textbook passage, non-fiction article, etc. A Reading Log Table has also been included, for students to use to record their answers.

Three Stages of Questioning: Students use this handout to record questions they have before, during, and after they read. This handout helps students master the important skill of asking questions to aid understanding.

Comprehension Organizer: Students use this graphic organizer to categorize the main ideas and supporting details of a reading (text book passage, no fiction article, etc.) in note form. This graphic organizer helps students to practice retrieving and organizing important information.

What Are they Thinking?: Students chose an important figure from the reading, and write about what they think that person would be thinking in a certain situation (For example, what were the Vikings thinking during their first raid?) Students have the opportunity to both write and illustrate during this engaging activity.

Garbage Hunter: Students choose a figure from their reading, and imagine what they would discover if they looked into their garbage. Students illustrate the items, and explain their significance.

Powerful Ideas: For this activity, students must choose the three most important ideas from their reading, and then summarize those ideas into a clear paragraph. This helps students practice the key skills of finding important ideas, summarizing, and synthesizing.

Observe, Justify, Predict: Students use this handout as a pre-reading activity. Students must locate 3 different text features in their reading, and use them to help predict what they think the reading will be about. A great pre-reading tool!

Visualize, Draw, and Reflect: Students use this handout to illustrate and explain some of the pictures they made in their heads while reading. This is a great activity to have students practice the important skill of using visualization to aid understanding.

Non-Fiction Text Features Notes: A full set of notes on non-fiction text features is included. A detailed teacher copy and blank student template is included in this package.
Diary Entry: For this graphic organizer, students take on the role of a historical figure, and write a diary entry discussion a historical event from their point of view.

Twenty Questions: Students use this handout to brainstorm and answer twenty questions about their reading.

The 5W’s: Students use this sheet to brainstorm the Who, What, Where, When, and Why of a historical event.

Text Feature Scavenger Hunt: After learning about Text Features, Students use this worksheet to locate text features in their textbooks. Students must locate each text feature, and write down the page number they found it on.

Effective Summary Writing - Template, Notes, and Foldable: Writing an effective summary is a key skill for a Middle School Social Studies student to master. Students take notes on effective summaries, and use those notes to create a foldable. Everything they need to create the foldable has been included. A template to help them organize an effective summary is also included.

Illustrate and Inform Clipboard: Students use the clipboard image included on his worksheet to illustrate and describe a key event from their reading.

Important Event and Important Figure Flipbooks: Students use the included materials to create mini flipbooks featuring key events or key figures from their reading. These flipbooks are great additions to Social Studies Interactive Notebooks!

Series of Events Foldable: Students use this picket fence style foldable to record a chronological series of events. This foldable could be used with a textbook reading, class discussion, non-fiction article, etc.

Mini Mind Map: Students use this mini mind map template to help them brainstorm important information about a topic.

Reading Strategy Question Worksheets for Non-Fiction: A collection of Reading Strategy worksheets for non-fiction have been included. These can be applied to ANY non-fiction reading! The included worksheets focus on the key skills of asking questions, summarizing, making connections, and visualizing.

Key Event Star Foldable: Students choose a key event from their reading and create a foldable that shows the main idea and supporting details related to it. All supplies needed to create this foldable are included!

Key Figure Star Foldable: Students choose a key figure from their reading and create a foldable that shows important details relating to them. All supplies needed to create this foldable are included!
