This is a daily interactive number of the day. Its perfect for calendar time, carpet time, a transition to math, etc. It's done as a whole group so that students are verbally participating in each activity, although a worksheet is included so students can take the number of the day and practice skills independently. I start the year off leading the number of the day, but it quickly becomes student led and encourages all students to interact and be engaged! Included are the following skills:
*Odd or Even (call on a student to determine if # is odd or
*Add it up: Add each number
ex: 1,498 = 1 + 4 = 5
5 + 9 = 14
14 + 8 = 22
(or, students could add all four numbers= 1 + 4 + 9 + 8)
*Multiply: multiply each number
ex: 1,498 = 1 x 4 = 4
4 x 9 = 36
9 x 8 = 72
Leader asks participants to identify the number in the ones, tens,
hundreds, and thousands place. They do not have to go in order!
*Comparing: Leader compares todays number with number from
yesterday, and then says aloud “ ___ is less than (or greater than) ____
Leader asks students to round to the nearest tens and hundreds place.
*Before and after:
Students verbally identify the number that comes before and after the number of the day
