Product Description
This Interactive Spelling Notebook was designed for Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms and consists of 30 weeks of 4 lessons each:

Lesson 1: Flip books

Flip books provide an easy way to practice phonological awareness, the ability to manipulate the sounds in language, while applying the phonics skills and learning “chunks” of sounds. Not only are you helping students recognize and produce rhyming words, but you are also teaching students to blend and segment onset and rimes Additionally, students are practicing adding and substituting individual sounds (phonemes) in simple, one-syllable words to make new words and blend them together. In addition, blends and digraphs are included at the back of this document for those teachers who would like to challenge students a little more.

Lesson 2: Picture Sort
Students glue the guide words at the top of a page in their notebook and sort the pictures by gluing them under the correct column: either the picture has the word family being practiced, or it doesn’t. Picture sorts are the perfect way to hone a student’s listening skills.  They help beginning readers develop Concept of Word, phonological awareness, and phonics.

Lesson 3: Spin and Record
Using a paperclip and their pencil, students spin the paperclip and add the onset landed on to the rime/word family.
This is a fun way to gain additional practice in manipulating onset and rimes, as well as reading and blending onset and rimes.

Lesson 4: Listen, Highlight and Read
Students practice listening to words that follow the pattern and contain the word family being taught. Then, they locate the pattern in the context of a word and highlight that pattern. They may also underline the pattern using a pencil instead of highlighting.

Finally, students read short, simple sentences in order to give them practice reading the pattern in context. All sentences were designed to utilize only the kindergarten sight words in addition to the word family being taught. All other words contain “rebus” pictures in order to guarantee successful practice.
