This mini-book features 16 student-favorite poems from Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky and others!
I designed this book to be used as a supplement to my 2nd grade poetry unit. The poems were selected based on their sense of rhythm, use of repeated phrases and/or rhyming words, and level of student interest. The book is designed to help you meet the following standards:
Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
I used this book for small group instruction during my poetry unit. Throughout the book we highlighted repeated phrases and circled groups of rhyming words to focus our attention on the rhythm of the poem. There are poems of varying difficulty and my students loved having their own poetry book to take home at the end of the unit!
There is a rhyming words bank at the end of the book where students can list pairs of rhyming words that they found, as well as a brief poem review page. Three of the poems also have drawing prompts to encourage the comprehension strategy of visualization while reading.
I have also included a rhyming words pre and post-assessment as I saw that this was an area that most of my students were struggling with.
Have fun teaching!
