Interactive powerpoint game for teaching math place value in second grade. 2.NBT.A.1

The game shows the class a number in written form and then asks what digits are in a certain place. There are ten buttons on the screen (0-9) and if someone presses the correct answer, applause plays and the screen details where all of the digits in the number go. If someone presses the wrong button, an explosion sound plays. The user can continue trying until they get the right answer. When it is time to advance to the next question, the user can press the NEXT button in the bottom right corner of the screen.

My kids LOVED it.

Here is what I did:

I brought the questions up on the screen and the kids wrote down their answers on a dry-erase board and held them up. Once everyone had the correct answer, I drew names from a cup and had that student come up and press the button to see if the class had the correct answer. We would then review the number using the text that is presented on the screen before going to the next problem.

There are 10 question slides of escalating difficulty. Two digit numbers are at the start, and three digit numbers toward the end.

There are two versions of the powerpoint included. One is macro-enabled and the other one is not. The macro is there only to fix a pointer issue when using Smartboards or Activboards. If you don't trust macros or your school won't let you use macro-enabled material, you can use the non-macro version and just follow the instructions on the first slide to take care of the issue.

The issue is that after 3 seconds, PowerPoint hides the cursor. For interactive slideshows such as this one, this can cause problems because the Smart and Activ pens do not always make the cursor "wake up". So a kid might press an answer button and nothing happens. If you touch around the screen a few times and then click on the answer again then it will work, but that's annoying, so I included fixes in both versions.

This is not a "set it and forget it" activity. It is designed to be teacher lead.
