Each interactive read aloud can work with ANY book and comes with all the needed resources to complete the activity. All you need is the book!

1. Story Elements:

This interactive read aloud activity focuses on story elements. Print, cut, laminate, and attach each of the provided story elements to a Popsicle stick to create signs for each child or partnership. While reading, the students will have to listen closely to hear if their story element is being read aloud. (Example: If the story is talking about how the character is feeling, a student can hold up the “feeling” sign.) When a student raises their sign, briefly stop to talk about why they raised their story element sign. Your students will be closely listening while engaging in this fun activity.

This activity includes:
- 6 story element signs
- All signs come in color and black & white

2. Character Traits & Antonyms:

This interactive read aloud focuses on character traits and antonyms. Before starting the activity, print and cut out the provided character traits to make signs for each child or partnership. As you read, students need to pay close attention to notice when a character is displaying a trait based on what they are doing, saying, feeling, or thinking within the story. As students raise their signs, stop and ask for evidence in the story for that particular character trait.

This activity includes:
- 11 character traits & 11 Antonyms
- Signs come in color and black & white

3. Read Aloud Retell:

This interactive read aloud activity focuses on retelling. To prepare, put the provided stop signs after the beginning, middle and end of your read aloud book. Before reading, give students a BME bracelet to wear during the read aloud and explain how all stories have a beginning, middle, and end. While reading, when you reach the first stop sign, allow the students to jot down what happened at the beginning of the story on their BME organizer, and continue this process for the middle and end. Lastly, use the "retelling hand" tool to help the class remember the important pieces to a good retell: Who are the characters? What is the setting? What happened at the beginning, middle and end?

This activity includes:
- BME bracelets
- BME organizer
- Stop signs for the beginning, middle, and end
- Retelling hand
- All resources come in color and black & white

When you reach a word while reading, use the “Tackling Fancy Words” poster (or bookmark) to figure out the selected word with the class. After tackling the tricky word, write the "fancy" word on a gumball and place it in your “Vocabulary Gumball Machine”. Watch your gumball machine fill up with fancy words throughout the school year. ENJOY!

This activity includes:
- Gumball machine poster
- "Tackling Fancy Words" poster

5. Before, During, After Read Aloud Wheels:

This interactive read aloud activity focuses on student comprehension. Before reading, spin the "Before Reading Wheel" and have the class answer the questions. These questions are designed to have the kids start thinking about the book before even opening to the first page. During the read aloud, occasionally have the students roll their reading cube and answer the questions as a class, in a group, or with their partner. These questions are designed to assess comprehension, to see if the students are understanding the story. Lastly, when finished reading, spin the "After Reading Wheel" and answer the questions with the class. These questions are designed to get the students talking and discussing about the book and make predictions of what might happen next.

This activity includes:
- Before Reading Wheel
- After Reading Wheel
- Reading Cubes (2 colors)
- "Stop, Drop & Roll" stop signs
- ALL resources come in color AND black & white

6. Character Inferences:

This interactive read aloud activity focused on making inferences about what the character could be saying, thinking, or feeling, based on what is happening in the story. While reading the story, stop and think about how the character is feeling and why. Then, occasionally add a thought bubble or speech bubble to the book and have students turn and talk about what this character could be thinking or saying based on what is happening in the story. Do this throughout the book, first identifying how the character is feeling and then inferring the character's thought and/or dialogue!

This activity includes:
- Thought bubbles
- Speech bubbles
- Blank hearts for feelings
- All of these resources come in both color and black & white
