I Can Tell How Words Make Me Feel!
To introduce character feelings, I like to get my students involved by reading a piece that has a roller coaster of emotions.
Students have emotion sticks in their hands and they hold them up as I read the story. This makes them feel that they are a part of the story.
When we are finished, I give them a copy of the story and let them read it with their reading partner and use their emotion sticks again.
When we are finished with the activity, they store the sticks in the provided pocket in their reading response notebook, along with the story. (Fold into trifold) We will revisit it several times before the year ends.
Here’s what you get: (in color and black and white)
2 original high interest stories with different emotions throughout
The Real Treasure
Joni and Her Cat
2 sets of emotions cards in which you can make emotion sticks. (It takes a lot of sticks, so you can also just let them use them as cards.)
2 graphic organizers to connect the student to the character
The feeling sticks/cards can be used for any story that you read.
