Reading Graphic Organizer
-The Common Core State Standards require active, engaged reading. I have included a number of things within this product to encourage students to read actively and critically. Have your students use this resource during, and after, reading. This product features:
★An explanation of different types of questions and connections students could make during reading.
★Two pages consisting of tables requiring students to record page numbers, direct quotes, and questions, connections, or general commentary related to each quote.
★A final page featuring space for students to expand upon their two most important annotations. You could use this as a space to develop students' paragraph writing abilities, or this could serve as a space for more informal journaling.
You can use this product with both fiction and nonfiction works. I give students this to use both in class and for homework, and it encourages them to read deeply and critically. Instruct them to keep this handout in front of them as they read, and they will record their thoughts during reading; such an exercise cultivates active, as opposed to passive, reading.
