Getting your students’ interactive science notebooks set up properly at the beginning of the school year or semester can be tricky. Help them get started on the right foot with this Interactive Notebook Set-up guide. This PowerPoint presentation describes the purpose and importance of keeping an interactive science notebook, then guides students through the step-by-step process of setting up their table of contents, numbering their pages, and gluing in reference sheets. The last slide of the power point presents the ISN grading rubric so that your students will be aware of what is expected of them in order to receive a good grade. The PowerPoint is editable so you can change it for the specific needs of your classroom and students.
The easy-to-interpret grading rubric serves as a great way to quickly grade interactive science notebooks. Flip through the pages of your students’ notebooks and make sure their notes are complete and in the correct format, the table of contents is up-to-date, important information is highlighted, and independent work is complete and well thought out. The rubric can be stapled into their notebook once you complete grading.
The grading rubric loosely follows AVID guidelines, but is in editable word format, so you can modify it for your needs. It can easily be modified to be used in subject areas other than science.
A Spanish version of the rubric is also available to assist ESOL students.
