Spelling is a constant battle for my 3rd graders, no matter the year, no matter the group, no matter the reading level. I created this product to serve as a year-long spelling curriculum. I’ve developed and included a yearly outline, interactive whole group recording charts, interactive partner practice flippers, practice sheets (that can be used with any list), pre-test spelling forms, final spelling test forms, and suggested weekly spelling lists. Each pre-test spelling form includes space for 6 spelling words. Each weekly spelling form includes space for 12 weekly words.
I have experienced teaching spelling a variety of ways. By combining some of these strategies, I have developed a cohesive program that involves teaching spelling patterns and then having students apply these patterns in spelling high frequency words. The words on the suggested spelling lists are a combination of Dolch Word Lists (first 300 and nouns), plus Fry’s High Frequency Lists. You will notice some of the words repeated in suggested spelling lists. These are the commonly misspelled words that contain multiple spelling patterns. The spelling lists are suggested spelling lists, as you might choose to differentiate spelling lists for students using weekly spelling patterns. The spelling patterns will connect week to week and students will begin connecting patterns during lessons as the weeks go on! I like to have students glue spelling pattern charts and flippers in an interactive spelling notebook to reference throughout the year. Students can reflect and refer to their charts and flippers week by week and during independent writing and word work time. Spelling practice sheets can also be glued in their notebooks!
