This resource is a progress portfolio based on the book by Anne Davies "Making Classroom Assessment Work". Students use a binder to include the I Can Statements for the English Language Arts curriculum and include a sample of their work for each one.
In addition to teacher evaluation, there are two other types of descriptive assessment associated with the portfolio. Students assess themselves and a classmate assess the work.
The learning outcomes are those of the Saskatchewan curriculum, but can be used by any Grade 5 teacher in any location.

How to Use This Resource
Reproduce the Table of Contents for each student when you start a new section of the English Language arts curriculum. There will be four sections to the portfolio. Each one will have a Table of Contents featuring the I Can Statements for the section.
They can use a binder for this portfolio so that they keep all their work for English Language Arts in the same place.
Glue a large brown envelope on the front cover. Students will keep their work unfinished work in this envelope.
Use a different colour for each new unit and then the Table of Contents for each one.
Each page has the I Can Statement printed on top. This will be the left hand side of the binder when the pages are open. It would be more feasible to have students print this at the top of the page.
Students should be instructed to number the pages of each unit when they start.
They can decorate a page for the cover of each section, such as on page 7
You can reproduce the assessment page for each student, but it would be more cost-effective to have students divide the page into 3 sections. Label the top section – What I think of my work for this learning indicator. Label Section 2 – Classmate’s Assessment and Section 3 – Teacher Assessment
Since English Language Arts outcomes and indicators are broad and take place over the course of the school year it would probably be best for students to insert what they feel is their best work samples in each area for the month.
