Pass out the 8 1/2 by 11 cards to each student in the class who are seated at their desk. Each card has a craft of writing on it. For example, here are the list of crafts: dash, alliteration, purposeful sentence fragment, metaphors, idioms, parenthesis, and personification. On each card is at least one example of the craft. As students read their writing out loud to the class, students in their desks listening, hold up the cards when they hear the craft of writing in the passage that is being read. This holds the students accountable and forces them to listen as others read their writing.
