Theme is one of my favorite topics to teach! I like to weave theme discussions throughout our entire school year. By the end of the year, when students finish a text, they always think about the underlying theme of the text and what the author wanted you to walk away thinking about.
As you teach each theme throughout the year, you can hang these posters around the classroom. When students read independently and complete a text, they can decide on the theme on their own, using evidence from the text.
Students write on a sticky note what the theme of their text is, and stick it to that theme chart. This gives students an independent quick write, a reason to finish their book, and serves as a sort of book recommendation for peers who see those sticky notes and want to try that text next.
