This interactive writing folder guides students through the steps of the writing process and helps them independently revise and edit their writing pieces.
Before school starts, I glue the pages to a blue two-pocket folder with no brads. I then run them through the laminator so that students may use a dry erase marker to check off their progress during each step.
Mini lessons on revising and editing are necessary. Some students will need more guidance than others as they will check off all the categories for revising and editing in less than a minute! By the end of the school year though, the majority of students can do a pretty decent job revising and editing independently.
We keep our writing journals, spelling dictionaries and current writing project in the folders. It's easy for me to see where each child is at in the writing process with a quick check of the back of the folders. Once a student has published a writing piece, they staple together their rough drafts and finished product and hand them in and erase their folders! All ready for the next project!
