This interactive and interpersonal activity has students choosing a famous and imaginary family to 'adopt' as their own. Once they have chosen the family, they complete cloze sentences to describe individual members of the family, and then write a paragraph describing their family in full. Once they have described the family, they listen to other students' descriptions of families, and try to guess the family and the family member that they have picked. Finally, students respond to prompts comparing their imaginary and actual activities.
This is a great activity, as it safely explores family vocab. Students use 'ser' and 'tener' to describe age and characteristics of the family, using the yo and el/ella forms, and they get practice writing in paragraph form and changing between the subject pronouns. In addition, they can reflect on their own family composition and respond to prompts in Spanish. They listen to descriptions and interpret information from other students as well as speaking about their own family. Lots of practice in many forms. I have used this activity in conjunction with a Venn diagram, and as a platform for comparing media versus actual families. Please post if you have any questions about follow-up activities.
