DEVELOP CONVERSATIONAL SKILLS & HIGH-LEVEL THINKING

SENTENCE STEMS AND COLLABORATION KEY HANDOUTS
ASSESSMENT SPREADSHEET WITH EXAMPLE INCLUDED

Guide students towards an engaging student-led discussion with the resources below! Applicable to Harkness applications.

Before the discussion, I hand out the Graded Discussion Tracker Example and explain to students that they will be assigned an ID number and that their contributions will be tracked. I use this example, along with the Grading Scale, to demonstrate to students the expectations for this assessment.

I've also included 21 Questions for Any Novel to use to support discussions, but do encourage your students to brainstorm questions of their own!

I then hand out the Contribution Key to show students the types of contributions they can make to an academic discussion. I review the different categories and point out the level associated with each category.

It is helpful to also explain the Sentence Stems handout at this time as well - students can see the types of sentence stems they can use to begin their statements.

While conducting the discussion, I find it helpful to have a printed copy of the Contribution Key for each student, as well as myself. For the first few discussions, I also demonstrate the assessment process by projecting the Graded Discussion Tracker Template on the overhead, and tracking the contributions live while the students conduct the discussion. Students can therefore view the types of contributions as they are made during the discussion. After students become familiar with the tracking process, I may begin to sit in on the conversations and track them at the table or on paper.

I've included a template in Excel format for live grading on your device, as well as a printable template that can be used on paper.

I will grade the discussion after it is complete, and prefer not to share the grades with students; I do, however, show them the completed Graded Discussion Tracker Template with the "Grade" column removed for their own reference.
