This Grade 3 Social Studies teaching resource offers an in-depth coverage of all the indicators for the outcome IN3.3 – Illustrate examples of interdependence of communities
Although it has been written to meet the outcome and indicators for the Saskatchewan Social Studies curriculum, it will meet the needs of educators teaching students about life in different communities of the world.
Lessons are presented in the order of the indicators:
a. Research the origins of products and items used by students in the local classroom
b. Provide examples of ways in which student choices and actions may affect people elsewhere in the world (charitable donations, consumption of goods, recycling)
c. Identify products produced locally and sold elsewhere
The lessons and activities in this resource are aligned with those of the ELA curriculum so teachers can combine outcomes in Social Studies with English Language Arts allowing you more time to spend on each subject.
Evaluation is on-going throughout the unit. Projects, class discussions, group work and individual activity should be noted and used for assessment purposes.
One tactic that has been found to work well is to use a binder with pages for each students. Choose four students a day to observe and write anecdotal notes about their work in all subjects for that day. Then when time comes to write report cards you have all the information you need for your grade and comments in accordance with the assessment rubrics.
