In this 8-9 day simulation project, students will work collaboratively to plan a trip across North America, as they would have done in the 1840s and 1850s. Students will need to use map skills (you will need to download a free US political and US physical map--I recommend downloading from this link: http://www.eduplace.com/ss/maps/pdf/us_nl.pdf), math (money and mileage calculations), problem-solving, language arts, and social studies skills.
In this project, students are arranged in groups of 4, and each person is given a specific task. The packet that I give to each group is part of this product, as are the occupation cards required for the first day of the activity, and the daily fate cards used for Months" 1-5 are also included. Rubrics for both group and individual grades are included. The only component not included is the map, which is copyrighted by someone else, and I have provided the link above. I place each packet in a binder to give to each group for use during the project, and that binder does not leave the room.
Note: Blank pages are placeholders inserted for your convenience. Blank pages in this document were inserted so that you can simply print this document and copy the packet pages (everything up until the "Fate Cards" and "Day 1 - Occupation Cards" and it will copy correctly for insertion into binders for each group to use.
