This lesson focuses on writing introductions to essays. This can be applied towards persuasive essays or informational/explanatory essays. It is a complete lesson aligned to the common core. It includes a focus, essential question, objectives/goals, why the skill is important, standards, technology tie in using the internet, teach, guided practice, independent practice, summary and notes to the teacher. This lesson gives young writers different options they can incorporate in their writing to produce a more interesting, attention grabbing introduction. Under the teach section, exemplar examples are given for each option as a model. These are color coded. Ideas for additional topics to practice with are given. Peer work is structured into the lesson, if so desired. This lesson can be used with a digital projector/computer. Since many of the standards are the same, this lesson can be used with grades 5-8. The amount of time for this lesson could run 90 minutes and up depending on a number of factors including if you use the additional essay prompts as practice in additional to the prompt for guided practice and independent practice.
