Before completing this investigation, students should already know that the sum of the interior angles of a triangle equals 180 degrees. By splitting apart quadrilaterals and pentagons into triangles, a process known as triangulation, students can determine the sums of the interior angles of any polygon, as well as draw conclusions based on their findings.

This investigation aligns with Common Core math objective 7.G.4:
Use facts about supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent angles in a multi-step problem to write and solve simple equations for an unknown angle in a figure.
