This is an intermediate English as a second or foreign language (ESL / EFL) formal examination focused on education, technology and future tenses for TESOL / TEFL teachers.

No need to struggle with formatting or figuring out the answers in an intermediate level English exam – the test is ready to print and comes with an answer key. Just add your school or college name. The exam can be edited as it’s in Word format.

The exam starts with two reading passage comprehensions (10 multi choice items) containing:

I. A story about a teenage girl attempting a challenge (a solo sailing voyage)

  • Vocabulary includes: crazy about; solo; preparation; set off; voyage; galley; challenge; wildlife; terrible.

II. A reading about education.

  • Vocabulary includes: curriculum; pupil; elite; boarding school; optional; compulsory; literacy; numeracy.

The next section is dialogue (10 multi choice items) which includes two situations:

I. Technology and future prediction;

II. Talking about the weather.

The next segment is dedicated to vocabulary. They are 10 fill in the blanks from boxes of words (to add difficulty, each box has one extra word that is not used). Two parts:

I. Prepositions of movement

  • e.g. through, over, among.

II. Weather

e.g. lightening, hail, boiling.

Grammar (Write 10 correct grammar sentences) is the theme of the next section. It’s in two parts:

III. Present continuous for future plans

e.g. We are leaving at 9am tomorrow.

IV. Present simple for future (bus/train timetable)

e.g. The train leaves at 9am tomorrow.

Lastly is the writing section. Students must write from a prompt to use future tenses such as be going to future and simple future.

A student answer sheet is included if you wish the students to write all answers on one piece of paper, rather than writing on the exam pages. This includes a grid for the first 20 questions (which are multiple choice) – helpful for speedier marking.

ADDITIONALLY INCLUDED: A 30 page PDF with exam content outline with revision notes and practice exercises for students. You can use as handouts for students or project the PDF to the whiteboard for students to use in class during lesson time prior to the students taking the exam. It's good for them to practice and be refreshed about what they learned before going into the exam.

There is a teacher's answer key and a marked-up version of the exam.

The exam is 60 minutes in duration and was given to grade 11 students in a private school in south-east Asia (CEFR levels A2 going to B1).

I hope it's useful to you.
