Are you using interactive math notebooks in your classroom? I love them! This lesson on how to solve multi-digit multiplication problems that extend to 2-digit by 2-digit using the area model and partial products contains everything you need for your interactive notebook. It includes a preview which leads into the lesson. It also has numerous slides for the interactive learning part of the lesson and a process for students to practice independently. This lesson displays nicely on a whiteboard for whole group instruction or computers and tablets for small group instruction. This lesson allows for group or partner discussion which is a great way to build community in the classroom. This can be a fun and engaging way to teach multiplication using the area model and partial products.
This resource contains 33 full color slides that focus on using the area model and partial products to multiply a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number through the gradual release model. Also included are left and right side activities for the interactive notebook. The preview slide has the students solve a multiplication problem using the distributive property. Then the interactive learning part of the lesson teaches students how to multiply a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number using the area model and partial products. Several of the slides are great visual aids to help differentiate instruction for all learners through chunking and repetition. There is also a process at the end of the lesson for students to practice independently. This process can be used as an exit ticket to see what the students have learned. I have also included an additional slide with six grids for students to cut out and use in their interactive notebook and for their process. Be creative and do what works best for you and your students.
