Use this literature circle packet to run small reading groups. Students are each given a job for the number of pages or chapters that are read, and then share their work the next day in the literature discussion group. Jobs include selection summarizer, literary connector, literary luminary and discussion director. This packet is designed for higher elementary students, but can be used with grades 3-5 students. There are 4 different members made into this packet, but you can have more than one member 1 or member 2 and so on to accommodate larger literature circle groups. I've found that 4 is a good number to keep it to, as discussion can be repetitive or very long with a lot more students. Make a different colored copy for each cover based on what member they are (member 1 is blue, member 2 is green, etc,) and then do the rest of the pages white. You can then make the booklets as big or as small as you need them to be based on the number of pages or chapters there are in the book that you are reading. I have made a standard 12 day schedule on page one of the booklet and have also already put in order 12 days for each member’s book. More can be added if needed. Having students self-assess is also important. There is a spot for them to grade themselves each day after your literature circle meets and also on the job that had to do each day. You can take their grades of themselves into consideration when you grade them after the book is complete. Lastly, there is a section for final thoughts on the book at the end. You can assign students to write a review, or simply share what they though about the book to you before you collect the packet to grade.
