Teaching a math lesson using interactive notebooks has become my passion. This is a lesson on how to decompose a fraction into the sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way. The lesson includes a preview which leads into the lesson. It also has numerous slides for the interactive learning part of the lesson and a process for students to practice independently. This lesson displays nicely on a whiteboard for whole group instruction or computers and tablets for small group instruction. This lesson can be a fun and engaging way to teach students how to decompose a fraction.
This resource contains 30 full color slides that focus on how to decompose a fraction into the sum of fractions. This lesson includes activities for the left and right side of the interactive notebook. The preview slide asks students what they think it means to decompose a fraction. This leads into the lesson of teaching students how to decompose fractions. Several of the slides are great visual aids to help differentiate instruction for all learners through models and repetition. There is also a process at the end of the lesson for students to practice independently. This process can be used as an exit ticket to see what the students have learned. I have also included a bonus slide for students to decompose a fraction of their choice. Be creative and do what works best for you and your students.
