This lesson was a different approach to teach students how to round numbers using benchmark numbers on a number line. I taught this lesson with the students using their interactive notebook through gradual release. The lesson includes a preview which leads into the lesson. It also has numerous slides for the interactive learning part of the lesson and a process for students to practice independently. This lesson displays nicely on a whiteboard for whole group instruction or computers and tablets for small group instruction. This was an engaging way to teach rounding.
This resource contains 41full color slides that focus on rounding numbers using benchmark numbers on a number line through the gradual release model. Also included are left and right side activities for the interactive notebook. The preview slide ask students list numbers that would round to a given number. Then the interactive learning part of the lesson teaches students how to round to a given place using benchmark numbers on a number line. Several of the slides are great visual aids to help differentiate instruction for all learners through chunking and repetition. There is also a process at the end of the lesson for students to practice independently. This process can be used as an exit ticket to see what the students have learned. I've included a bonus slide, to challenge student thinking. Be creative and do what works best for you and your students.
