This original story is a great reading activity for intermediate Spanish language learners. The story vocabulary focuses on exercise and body parts. I wrote this story when I was introducing the subjunctive mood to students. There are ample examples of the subjunctive used with impersonal expressions such as "Es bueno/necesario/importante que..." The story also makes use of the present tense and contains the verb "ser" in the imperfect tense. Before the story, there is a list of important vocabulary. (If you don't want students to have a vocabulary list while they read, you can delete it.) After the story there are three activities. The first activity is a simple comprehension activity. The second activity asks students to practice using the subjunctive. The third activity challenges students to write independently about what they read.
This is my normal activity sequence when teaching a story: 1) introduce vocabulary and practice with visuals or in conversation 2) read story silently and individually 3) ask students about what they read, in Spanish or English 4) translate the story to English, act out the story as we re-read it together, or illustrate the story 5) complete the reading activities. Depending on how you choose to use this story, you could need anywhere from 30 minutes to 120 minutes of class time.
