HS PS1-3 Students will be able to identify types of intermolecular forces, determine the strength of different forces, and determine how intermolecular forces affect macroscopic properties of different substances.

This quiz covers types of intermolecular forces, strength of forces, and forces affect on properties such as vapor pressure, surface tension, melting point and boiling point. Students will also have to write a claim, supported by evidence and reasoning to answer the question: "How do intermolecular orcas affect melting/boiling?"

Though the evidence statements do suggest that students do not need to memorize specific types of intermolecular forces, I think its helpful to introduce them to them, but focus more on how the strength of forces impact physical properties, which is the focus of this assessment.

NGSSHS-PS1-3
Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles. Emphasis is on understanding the strengths of forces between particles, not on naming specific intermolecular forces (such as dipole-dipole). Examples of particles could include ions, atoms, molecules, and networked materials (such as graphite). Examples of bulk properties of substances could include the melting point and boiling point, vapor pressure, and surface tension. Assessment does not include Raoult’s law calculations of vapor pressure.
