Conflict is a critical element of plot, and this PowerPoint teachers internal and external conflict in a fun and engaging way. Students are given definitions of the two types of conflict. Their learning is then scaffolded through embedded videos, pictures, and finally text. Students participate throughout the PowerPoint by holding up index cards labeled either internal or external, depending on what the slide images depict. Students then analyze conflict in text statements on a worksheet. Finally, students generate their own conflict statements on index cards, which they will use to quiz each other in an inside/outside circle. Whew! This lesson is engaging, involves participation and moving around, and students forever remember the differences between internal and external conflict!
