This is a short unit from Duwauhkabec Learning for Life using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to “decode” words, titles, and a short historical passage. It invites students to "reverse transcribe" from IPA to standard American English.
Included in this package are the following:
• An instructional sheet on how to introduce IPA to a class
• Printable sheets that include charts of the IPA consonants and vowels, plus practice “decoding” exercises based on color words, animal words, titles of familiar books, and a short, familiar passage from the Declaration of Independence
• A short list of relevant online resources, games, etc.
• Answer keys for all exercises
NOTE: Related units with teacher and student introductions to IPA, more single-word and short-text “decoding” exercises as well as longer passages (fables, factual material, short stories, etc.) are available. Custom units can also be designed.
