Experts believe that in the next twenty years the internet will be as integrated into our life as electricity. Today, the internet holds more information than you could read in 1,000 lifetimes. Today, there are 644 million active websites and that number is growing each day. In the United States, we may take for granted how easy it is to get on the internet. In different parts of the world this isn’t the case.
Bring Internet Usage Statistics into your Algebra 2 / PreCalculus classroom with polynomial regression in this 21st Century Math Project!
In this 29 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the unit, two main assignments and one project --
-- In “Tablet Explosion”, students will use graphing calculators or excel to create three types of polynomial models (quadratic, cubic and quartic) and use them to predict the near future of tablet ownership in the U.S.
Note: Answer Keys are provided for most parts, but given the sensitivity of regression functions (particularly with rounding) student answers may differ. In my opinion as long as the critical thought is there and the mathematics are correctly done on their part (save for the rounding) these differences make good discussion points. Also many mathematical models that are good fits are not necessarily good at predicting. You’ll see examples of that throughout.
-- In “Mobile Consumption”, students will investigate 6 different aspects of mobile phone usage. For each of these aspects, they will create three different polynomial models to predict. There are three pages, if you wanted to modify it you could cut out different pages. Maybe use one page as a quiz!
-- and finally in “Internet Usage”, students will work in groups to make internet usage and mobile phone ownership projections for a different region on the world. With authentic data, students will create three polynomial models and predict the future. As a conclusion, students are asked to write a report to the World Bank summarizing their findings, areas of encouragement and areas of concern. Students would need to use evidence from their research as support.
A Spreadsheet to compute answers for the “Internet Usage” assignment is included. If you are savvy, you will figure it out easily. It’s kind of raw, but I hope it can be useful. It’s a bizarre look into how my brain works.
