This product allows students to practice interpreting the remainder in a division word problem. Students receive a word problem (9 word problems are given on the second page of the document), and complete a close read of the problem. They illustrate the problem to help them visualize what it's asking, and develop their plan to solve. This will help them see what to do with the remainder, and circle the appropriate action...deciding whether to drop the remainder, only use the remainder, add one to the quotient, or add remainder to one or more of the groups. Lastly, students explain why they did what they did to the remainder on the lines provided. I usually cut the word problems into strips (making sure not to include the answer of what to do with the remainder on the strip--that is for your reference only!), have the students glue their word problem into the appropriate section on the template, and pair them up to collaborate with a partner to problem solve and determine what to do with the remainder and why. Finally, students are invited up to the front of the room to present their completed template and be the "professor" for the class.
