If there is one thing I want my students to take away from this activity it is looking beyond the obvious. I wanted them to consider what a pumpkin might think and feel this time of year from sitting in a peaceful field to appearing in a house near year.
Many students will see a Jack-o-lantern or a pie. Others may think of Punkin Chunkin. I want students to brainstorm a list of at least ten possibilities for this character and then develop an interview between themselves and this object. I will challenge them to try an idea other students are not using.
I am using the interview format because it is like a script for a play. Students can imagine an interview for different media: TV, radio, video blog (vlog), etc. You could even have them record it if you wish.
I can also introduce the idea of personification.
This activity is not just a Halloween activity. I am introducing it in the month of October, but it could be used anytime during the fall harvest.
