Tired of the same old boring beginning of the semester get-to-know you games? What if you had a way to assess your students presentation skills, get your students talking to their classmates, and learn more about your students in one easy assignment? I developed this Interview with a Classmate assignment with all of those goals in mind and to mix up my beginning of the semester routine in my classes. Assignment includes a rubric to assess students presentation skills and give them a baseline to work with for the rest of the semester.
This assignment pairs students together to interview each other and introduce each other to the class in one minute introductions. This assignment is completely editable to fit your classroom needs. (I teach 90 minute class periods, so the timeline is customized for that, but feel free to edit for your class period time needs.) I launch into the assignment by doing a very quick lesson over presentation skills including confidence, body language, eye contact, volume, etc. Then I partner my students up by cutting small slips of different colored paper for the number of students I have in class, having students draw the slips of paper out of a hat, and students who got the same color paper become partners. This make assigning partners more randomized. Students are then given time to interview their partners and practice before their introduction presentations to the class.
Hope you enjoy!
