Into the West is the TNT miniseries about westward expansion of the United States in the 1800s. The miniseries begins in the 1820s with the two main characters Jacob Wheeler and Loved by the Buffalo. The plot follows the story of two families, one white American, one Native American, as their lives become mingled through the momentous events of American expansion. The story intertwines real and fictional characters and events spanning the period of expansion of the United States in the American West, from 1825 to 1890.
Episode 3 – Dreams and Schemes (warning* more violence in this episode - may require permission slips or not suitable for younger viewers - please preview)
The third episode of this miniseries deals with the Gold Rush in the late 1840s and 1850s. The Wheeler Family is in California and Jacob has left his family in the care of his brother Jethro. Jethro gets "gold fever" and joins the miners to the detriment of his family and himself. The Lakota and other Native American tribes are being forced onto reservations by the treaty of Ft. Laramie. Jacob comes back to the family after being discovered by his eldest daughter and the two Wheeler sons set out for the Pony Express and the Civil War by the end of the episode. There is also a parallel story of another Wheeler branch of the family settled in Kansas during the Civil War and the internal struggle of Bleeding Kansas.
