This projects works within a unit for Into the Wild, either the book by Jon Krakauer or the film by Sean Penn.
Good readers/viewers identify with characters.
Good readers/viewers make connections.
In this three-page document, students are tasked with RESEARCHING, CREATING a travel "pilgrimage" route, and PRESENTING their own route to Bus 142 up in Alaska. They must present their route much as a tour-guide would, trying to attract people to follow in their footsteps. In doing so, students will think about Christopher McCandless' journey and the choices he made.
Good presenters/writer think about their audience.
For the presentation, students need to think of their audience and make the trip sound exciting. Who would enjoy the trip? Why? What are some highlights along the way?
- Other criteria for the presentation are listed within.
- Marking Rubric is included.
- Student-Planning Sheet is provided.
- Three helpful websites to get students started are also provided.
I usually give students two full classes to work on this project. Depending upon the size of your class, presentations will last one or two days, also.
