Product Description
This Intro. to Atoms and the Atomic Theory Stations Set has 9 different stations on the basic structure of an atom, facts about the 3 subatomic particles, and the various atomic theories that have led to the current atomic model. It is intended for middle school, but could be easily adapted for high school.

Print-outs, directions, and teacher answer keys are provided. The only additional materials needed are: scissors, glue, tablets or computer access, and a Mystery Box created with basic household materials.

You will also receive some hints and tips that work best for my students and how I recommend running stations.

Please click on the "PREVIEW" above to see additional images.

The stations included in this set are:

•Optional Pre–Assessment included. This could be completed as an entrance ticket or warm-up for the day (before beginning stations).

INPUT STATIONS (students are acquiring new information)
•Station 1– Mystery Box exploration

•Station 2– Atomic Theory Reading Passage (2 differentiation options included- both video and audio files of the passage are included for students who require additional accommodations or as a way to eliminate a quiet reading station) with card sort. Students will need scissors and glue at this station. You may wish to have them glue their sorting pockets into an Interactive Science Notebook. Otherwise, provide paper for them to glue the pockets onto. Each pocket will include a total of 3 cards (picture of scientist(s), explanation of their contribution to the atomic theory, and an atom image as a visual of what that scientist believed the atom looked like at that time.

•Station 3– Atomic Structure YouTube video with handouts (computer/ipad/tablet needed at this station). If you don’t have access to additional computers, consider using your teacher computer or personal devices.

•Station 4- Explore Atomic Structure Students will read 4 task cards that guide them through building a model of a lithium atom. They will learn about the energy levels, nucleus, proton facts, neutron facts, electron facts, mass number, atomic mass, protons identify the element, all of the mass of the atom comes from the nucleus, number of electrons that the 1st energy level holds, number of electrons the 2nd energy level holds, etc... (atomic model needed at this station). If you don’t have a model, a paper version has been included for you. Students will also need a periodic table (provided).

OUTPUT STATIONS (students are organizing the information, applying it, and being assessed on what they learned)
•Station 5– Assess Yourself! A quiz type station to assess the overall knowledge of new material.

•Station 6– The Size of Subatomic Particles

•Station 7– Atomic Structure Concept Map (students organize what they’ve learned with a concept map—word bank included). A modified version is also included with connecting phrases to help guide struggling learners.

•Station 8– Write about it! Students are given the chance to reflect on their learning with 2 short writing passages.

•Station 9– Atomic Theory mini-assessment
