Want to introduce your senior students to literary theory and criticism but not sure where to start? Here's a good place!
I have created five PowerPoint presentations for different literary theories with student-accessible language. I use these over the course of the academic year rather than all at once - I use the order listed below too. Finally, my students choose an appropriate theory (in consultation with me) to apply to the text for their final essay of the course.
Each presentation provides definitions of key terms, background on main theorists, explanations of theory's main tenets, plus questions to analyze a variety of texts. In addition, I suggest three different texts to use for each theory AND I advocate for a single repeated text as an entry-way into applying each theory (and include teacher notes to make this part even easier for you!). Students get comfortable with this first text as they are (usually) uncomfortable applying each theory for the first time. It builds confidence and allows them to take added risks in their learning! Win-Win!
